I joined Mark Paxton for part of the time. Water remains in some of the old ponds and we saw the usual summer ducks: GADWALL, MALLARD, CINNAMON TEAL, and NORTHERN SHOVELER. All have nested in these ponds in the past, Gadwall and Mallard on a regular basis. I had four noisy GREEN HERONS along the creek and would have traded them for a bittern. A partially-leucistic BLACK-NECKED STILT was striking. Mark found a SPOTTED SANDPIPER in one of the ponds; from our distance it appeared mostly in basic plumage. Neither Mark nor I heard chats walking in, but a distant call as Mark started back was suggestive. Later, coming back the east levee I heard a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT singing about the creek center not far from where one has been found regulaly on the west levee. This was about 1015 hr.
