Several field trips and evening campfire presentations will be offered to experience the park's varied birdlife at the height of the nesting season. Come enjoy late spring in the Santa Cruz Mountains! This weekend is co-sponsored by California State Parks and the Mountain Parks Foundation. All events are free, and birders are welcome to attend any or all of the activities. See below for the list of scheduled activities. There is a day use fee of $5.00 per car. A group campsite will be specially reserved for this event. Weekend package for Friday and Saturday evening: $10 to camp in the group camp. Space is limited. FRIDAY, May 30,  8:30 PM: TBD presentation. Meet at the Campfire Center near Park Headquarters. SATURDAY, May 31, 5:15 AM - Marbled Murrelets and the Dawn Chorus, with David Suddjian. A chance to see and hear the endangered murrelet at its old growth forest nesting area.  Meet at Park Headquarters at 5:15 AM sharp.  (1-1/4 hours) SATURDAY, May 31, 7:00 AM - Birds of Big Basin, with David Suddjian.  Travel to various areas of the park (mostly by car) to seek Hermit Warbler, Black-throated Gray Warbler, Vaux's Swift, Pileated Woodpecker, Red-breasted Nuthatch, and many more. Bring water and snacks. Meet at the south end of Opal Creek Picnic area.  From Park Headquarters, go past the entrance kiosk, veer right past the store, and continue 0.25 mile to Opal Creek Picnic area.  (4-1/2 hours) SATURDAY, May 31, 1:30 PM - Birds of the Redwood Forest, with Lisa Myers.  Meander a couple of miles through the old growth forest and along Opal Creek seeking a variety of bird species. We'll identify birds by their song and identify and discuss all of the bird species we see.  Meet at Park Headquarters. (2-1/2 hours) SATURDAY, May 31, 5:30 PM - Potluck dinner for campers at the Group Camp. Bring a dish to share. SATURDAY, May 31, 8:30 PM - Campfire program: Ecology of the Breeding Birds of Big Basin, presentation by David Suddjian, focusing on songs and nesting habits.   Meet at the Campfire Center near Park Headquarters. SUNDAY, June 1, 7:00 AM - Birding the Redwood Forest by Ear with Todd Newberry.  The trees are so tall, the shadows are so deep, but your ears can hear lots of birds that your eyes can't see. We will "stop, look, and listen" to the bird sounds all around us, and will try to learn a half-dozen species out of the many we will hear.  Meet at Park Headquarters.  (2 hours) SUNDAY, June 1, 10:00 AM - Now that you know all about the birds, let's hike!  Join Big Basin docent Karen DeMello on a moderate 5-mile hike to Sempervirens Falls and Slippery Rock to examine wildflowers, butterflies, and (of course) birds!  Bring water & lunch, and wear good hiking shoes.
