Other than fly-over Black-crowned Night-heron, Double-crested Cormorant, and Band-tailed Pigeons, our first major sighting was the fledgling Great-horned Owl up in that same middle Eucalyptus tree, considerably higher than it was on Roxie's Wednesday trip. In the Questar it looked much wetter and angrier than the 6 birders standing under the roof overhang at the ranger station. We had a fair amount of song, including the usual 4 singing flycatchers and, when we walked up to the first oak trees up the power-line road, we had a mix of migrating warblers. In the flock we identified Nashville, Townsend's, Wilson's, Orange-crowned, Yellow-rumped, and, possibly, Black-Throated Gray Warblers. At the same spot we had Hutton's and Warbling Vireos and a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, as well as other chaparral species. At the upper Villa Marie area we had clearer weather, and thus clearer views of woodpeckers, flycatchers, goldfinches, finches, and bluebirds. My count for the day, including heard-only's, was 56 species. Frank Vanslager _______________________________________________ Do not post admin requests to the list.
