A pair of NUTTALL'S WOODPECKERS were copulating in the birches at the center of the meadow, and I've found the male drumming, and seen both of them chiseling on a couple of new potential nest holes in the dead snag in the same copse in the last two weeks. Red-tailed Hawks have nested near this meadow for the last many years, but I haven't been able to locate a nest this year so far. One was gathering nest material in my yard a couple of weeks, which is to say noisily ripping a branch off one of our redwoods, so they are presumably somewhere around. I've seen a pair of WHITE-TAILED KITES perching together and carrying nesting material over in the Raimundo-Peter Coutts area.
