The Cooley Picnic Area produced a HERMIT THRUSH, and RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER among others, and there were many VARIED THRUSH along the Zinfandel Trail. At the third bridge up the road from the picnic area, we had a pair of AMERICAN DIPPERS. One of them carried moss in its bill, which it dipped repeatedly in the water, and carried to a site under the bridge that both birds seemed to favor. Is this a nesting behavior? During the time we watched them (approximately 15 minutes), they flew both up- and down-stream from the bridge, doing lots of dipping and bathing and altogether putting on a fine show of Dipper behaviors! But the moss piqued our curiosity...
