For detailed information on how to get involved and compete for great prizes please visit our Birdathon website at http://www.scvas.org/meetings.html . If you have done a Birdathon in the past, you know how easy it is to participate and gather pledges. If you haven¹t, all the necessary info is posted on our SCVAS website http://www.scvas.org/tips_on_collecting_pledges.html . Check it out‹ getting pledges is easier than you think . These may be the easiest prizes you ever won! Modeled after SFBBO¹s Fall Challenge and birdathons held for many years by Audubon Society of Portland Oregon, SCVAS has gathered prizes worth nearly $10,000 from a host of generous sponsors (see below) --- and more prizes are rolling in. For an updated list of all the prizes visit http://www.scvas.org/sponsors_and_prizes.html . Competitors in the Birdathon are asked to obtain pledges that will support the educational programs (both youth and adult) at SCVAS. Participants can form their own teams or they can join one of the five "guided" teams sponsored by SCVAS. Three of the guided teams offer rare opportunities to bird Santa Clara County during Spring migration with advanced birders Mike Rogers, Les Chibana and Kirsten Holmquist. We also have guided teams geared toward beginners, and one for people who only have a few hours. For details on guided teams check: http://www.scvas.org/guided_birdathon_info.html . To join one of the guided teams call SCVAS at 408-252-3747. Competition for prizes will occur in several categories ranging from a 6-hour "Big Sit" to a 48-hour "Monster" birdathon in Santa Clara County and any of the counties that touch Santa Clara County. Other categories will include our traditional Santa Clara County 24-hour birdathon, several prizes for the "Best Species" found during the birdathon, and also the "most unique" birdathon (no rules). Major awards will be given to folks who raise the most money and to individuals on teams that tally the most species. Just a few of the prizes that will be awarded at our June 2003 dinner are: a top-rated Nikon Fieldscope III ED spotting scope system donated by Wild Bird Center (Los Gatos), a Kowa TS-614 Prominar (fluorite) spotting scope with tripod, 2 pairs of highly-rated binocs from the Swift Instruments Audubon series, 2 round-trip tickets on Southwest Airlines to anywhere they fly, 4 pairs of Celestron binocs donated by Wild Birds Unlimited (San Jose), complimentary nights at B&B¹s in Pt. Reyes, Cambria and Santa Barbara, season tickets for 4 to all Stanford home football games (including the Big Game), tickets for 2 to great shows at SJ Opera, SF Opera, West Bay Opera, Villa Montalvo, Flint Center, Stanford Lively Arts and Shoreline Amphitheater, gift certificates from Orvis, REI, Patagonia, Eddie Bauer¹s and Whole Foods Markets, fine wines donated by Ridge, Mirassou and Fogarty Wineries and complimentary meals at Michael¹s of Shoreline Park, Compadres, Max¹s Opera Café and the Carmel Mission Ranch. It¹s hard to imagine a better time than birding with your friends, collecting pledges to support SCVAS¹ education programs, AND winning great prizes at the June 2003 awards dinner (even the pizza and drinks will be provided by SCVAS). I hope that you and your friends join the Birdathon and that we¹ll see you at the awards dinner in June.
