All,

>From 11:05 to about 11:40 this morning Frank Vanslager and I had first winter 
FRANKLIN'S GULL in the second pond on the left from the entrance to CCFS 
(Coyote Creek Field Station).  The bird was about the size of BONAPARTE'S 
GULLS nearby but was much wider when seen from behind (heavier), had a darker 
gray mantle, a black tail band, a much larger black bill and dark red (almost 
black) legs.  The bird also had dark brownish-gray coverts and tertials, 
essentially all black primaries (upper and lower primaries with no apparent 
windows), it had a well developed black half hood (white forehead and whitish 
hindneck) and bright white split eyerings (the underparts were white).  More 
details later on other birds seen today.
