The bird was about the size of BONAPARTE'S GULLS nearby but was much wider when seen from behind (heavier), had a darker gray mantle, a black tail band, a much larger black bill and dark red (almost black) legs. The bird also had dark brownish-gray coverts and tertials, essentially all black primaries (upper and lower primaries with no apparent windows), it had a well developed black half hood (white forehead and whitish hindneck) and bright white split eyerings (the underparts were white).
