I got an email from a British Birder who will be here in a couple of days, in the area for a week, staying with friends in Walnut Creek, where he will have access to a car. Here are his target birds, in his own words, but the brackets are mine: ---BEGIN HIS EXCERPT: 1) SPOTTED OWL (I have been told about Muir Woods - can you recommend anywhere else that is a current site in case I fail to see one there?) [I told him Bothe-Napa State Park, 2 mile hike up Ritchey Canyon] 2) MOUNTAIN QUAIL.. I may need to travel a few miles.. north, south, east ??? is anyone seeing them?? [I told him Robert Lewis Stevenson State Park in the Calistoga area] also 3) Thayer's Gull [I had no specific info for the Walnut Creek area] 4) Black-backed Woodpecker - I know this species involves "many" miles and anyway may not be feasible due to snow??!! any up to date info appreciated.. " [The closest I know about are Yosemite and Emerald Bay area of Lake Tahoe, but both are snow-covered] ----- END OF HIS EXCERPT Does anyone have any better or additional locations?
