Pinos with a visiting British birder, Phil Espin. Notable within Santa Clara County was a single adult GREEN HERON in the Mountain View Forebay, two male GREEN-WINGED TEAL in the Palo Alto FCB, the injured alternate WESTERN SANDPIPER in the Mountain View Forebay still, an alternate SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER in Adobe Creek along with 5+ basic birds, and a TREE SWALLOW foraging widely in these areas. Sunday, 6/22/2003 and today, 6/24/2003, I checked the palms at the Palo Alto Duck Pond for SNOWY EGRETS. There are 4+ adults in this area (just to the right of the old fountain) all in remarkable breeding plumage. The nest site Peter Metropulos found earlier in the spring has two half-size nestlings, squabling most of the time. This is most easily seen with a scope from the opposite side of the pond, near where there is a fence that crosses (but does not block) the trail around the pond. This is the first nesting I'm aware of. It is difficult to see nests in these ponds and there may be additional nesting snowies as well as night herons.
