But I finished at Shoreline, where there may be a Franklin's Gull in the vicintiy of the tidal basin across from the pumphouse, north of the San Antonio parking lot. The bird is an immature, somewhere between 1st winter and 1st summer. It has the dark, but smudgy, crown, nape, and side of head, enclosing a rather noticeable white eyering. The bill is all black, between Laughing and Bonapartes in size. Underparts nearly all white. The tails is white with a thin black terminal band. Inflight wing pattern not like Bonapartes adult or imm. Actually not much of any pattern. Black primaries with small amount of white. Legs were covered with mud. Most of the time it was in the tidal basin along the levee, within 500 feet of the wooden observation deck. It landed in Charleston Slough once. There was a 1st summer or adult Bonapartes, acquiring the black hood, in the area. The last Franklins I saw in CA was an imm at SVWPCP back in '95 or so and the Shoreline bird is a good match of it. So if anyone at Shoreline sees such a bird please report it, whether you think it's Franklins or not. Thanks and good birding, Dave Weber Milpitas. _______________________________________________ Do not post admin requests to the list.
