On Saturday, 14 Jun 03 I stopped by the EEC in Alviso and walked out along Mallard Slough. The slough is definitely devoid of any breeding herons and egrets. This used to be the biggest rookery in the county - I wonder what happened to them? There were 5 total BLACK SKIMMERS about, 2 on the first island and 3 on the third, with a potential nest on the third island. There are 2 FORSTER'S TERNS nesting in the marsh itself, just across the levee from the first island. I also flushed a couple of BURROWING OWLS from the levee in this area. There's also a pair of BURROWING OWLS at the entrance gate. A TREE SWALLOW was flying around at the EEC, seeming out of place at this location at this time of year.
