Thanks for the new photo Tom, definitely a California Gull. A good example on how a single photo can be misleading. Some aspects said California Gull, others did not. The second photo looks all California. Points to consider are: dark eye at this stage; bicolored bill; bill not as thick as it appeared in the first shot, but long and parallel sided at the base; grey on mantle on the darker end of the scale, Ring-bill and Glaucous-winged are paler; definitely blackish primaries coming in; primaries missing but long winged look still apparent from this shot; body slimmer and not so rotund as Glaucous-winged or hybrid... etc. cheers Al Alvaro Jaramillo Biologist San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory P.O.
