The sandpiper was actually seen in the "Bailey Cove" extension at the southeast end of the reservoir. "Bailey Cove" is a seasonal marshy area that can be seen near the intersection of McKean and Bailey Roads. Now, a few precautions about accessing the area. There is very limited parking here. The only legal parking is a pull-out space for maybe 2 to 3 cars at most on Bailey Road heading east. There is no parking at all along McKean Road and also no parking on the west side of Bailey Road at the intersection even though it looks like there could be better parking on that side. People have been ticketed for parking on the west side. Also when leaving the area, I always drive all the way over Bailey Road to Coyote Valley and turn around at the IBM facility. I personally think that it's way too dangerous to attempt a U-turn at McKean and Bailey as both roads have blind curves and cars come through here pretty fast. Once crossing McKean Rd there is a small dirt path that leads down toward the cove. Where the path forks, keep to the right - the "high road" - and you can have good views of the marsh area. The lower path leads nowhere. A scope is advisable for viewing the birds. Other shorebirds seen here recently have included Short-billed Dowitcher, Greater Yellowlegs, Western Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper, and Wilson's Phalarope.
