The bird was no longer under the pedestrian bridge, but hauled out on the west bank about a third of the way to Mission College Boulevard. By using my scope I could see a few frayed retained juvenal feathers on the upper back, confirming that the bird is indeed one year old. There are also a few more recently acquired adult feathers lower down in the back, but most of the plumage is extremely faded and abraded (including the flight feathers on the visible right wing). The bird was still alert, but given that it was hauled out on land and covered with ants it probably needs help if it is to survive. Mike Rogers P.S.
