'03, my wife Pat & I birded the Panoche Rd. from Paicines Reservoir, San Benito County, to the Fresno Co. Line. Following are the highlights of our 68 spp.: Paicines Res. Eared Grebe (2) GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, (10) Canada Goose, (ca.10) Green-winged Teal, (1)(Pat) (11 other spp. of ducks) BALD EAGLE, ad. FERRUGINOUS HAWK, (1 ad.) PRAIRIE FALCON, (1)(Pat) GREATER ROADRUNNER (1 m.& 1 f.=pr?) nearby, below lakeside lookout Tree Swallow, (4) Phainopepla, (1 f.) regrettably the Cienega (south) Rd. is still closed Note: the Cassin's Kingbird reported earlier didn't show today Panoche Rd.(miles, 0 odometer at Paicines) 3.6 mi.(MM38.60), 1st Bridge RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER Nuttall's Woodpecker CANYON WREN (close, from bridge) Note: Great Horned Owl roosting/nesting? cave empty/eroded in cliff face here 10.4 mi. off road chaparral face, "amphitheater" effect Acorn Woodpecker California Thrasher, (2), singing on opposite territories 18.2 mi.(MM18.47) Calif.Dept. of Forestry Station (closed today) BALD EAGLE (1 ad.) perched on hill snag in view of Panoche Rd. (30+min.) Golden Eagle, (1 ad.) soaring Yellow-billed Magpie, (4-5) Phainopepla, heard only 23.5 mi. beginning of valley floor Golden Eagle, (2 ad. = pr?) Junction Little Panoche X Panoche Rd. (27.8 mi.) whole area searched for Mountain Plover as reported earlier, without success Shotgun Pass (bottom, West end), Little Panoche Rd. n. pullout area MERLIN, (1) (dark race) perched on fence wire!, above "Chukar" rocks Loggerhead Shrike, (1) making 3 different calls Green "Tank" House tree, Panoche Rd. [98] MERLIN, (1) flew into perch (bolder breast stripes) Another Mountain Plover site here was checked. They were somewhere! Silver Creek Ranch, Panoche Rd. FERRUGINOUS HAWK, (1 ad.) perched on roadside fence post (great views) and flew to catch, Calif.Ground Squirrel? and dine in west pasture/field Note: "Closed" sign for Rd.98, Panoche Rd. was incorrect today with an easy, shallow ford over Silver Creek; but any wetness on this Rd. to I 5 would be impassible. First Lark Sparrows finally found ca. 5 mi. from Creek crossing in Fresno Co.
