I should note that during last Saturday's SCVAS field trip to Ed Levin Park I noted several (5 or 6) essentially all white gulls (not necessarily Glaucous Gulls as I couldn't see their bills well enough) flying over the park toward Calaveras Reservoir. Later large numbers of gulls could be seen flying back toward the bay. Apparently during this time of the year significant numbers of gulls fly from the bay to the reservoir on a regular basis and it seems that if one choose the proper vantage point that these gulls could be properly identified as they flew low over the hills toward the reservoir. Typically, I suspect that the gulls make these flights later in the morning and early afternoon so as to make good use of thermals.
