View Forebay. These were also enjoyed by an Audubon group from Visalia. They and I fruitlessly scanned for Short-eared Owls over the Flood Control Basin from 4:45 to 5:15PM but seems like there was a SE Owl right behind us a bit earlier. Darn! Scoping pond A1 did not yield any loons. No Skimmers on skimmer island. Vivek [[email protected]] -----Original Message----- From: Jack Cole [mailto:[[email protected]]] Sent: Saturday, January 04, 2003 8:21 PM To: [[email protected]] Subject: [SBB] SBB Two of the rarities that Bob Reiling's team did not chase today I saw: this morning the eight Red Phalaropes were just past the levee between salt ponds A12 and A11, again among about 40 Eared Grebes, and the Short-eared Owl was seen over Charleston Slough at 4:25 pm. In between I saw the "amazing" alternate-plumaged Bonaparte's gull among 2-300 of it's basic-plumaged brethren across from the Duck Pond at the Baylands, where I also found a Whimbrel. A Merlin was over the Forebay (it landed 3 feet above a Black-crowned Night Heron which did not budge) and a Clapper Rail was in the usual spot along the boardwalk at the Baylands.
