On Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 3:05 PM, an immature Golden Eagle flew eastward over Hidden Villa, roughly along the line of Page Mill Road. The bird was easily ID'd as a youngster by the bold white patches in the center of its wings and broad whitish band at the base of its tail. Other Goldens I've seen there (including 2 together in mid-December) have always been adults. At about 4PM on that day, while walking along the summit trail along Elephant Mountain (on HV's Hostel Trail), a Pacific-race MERLIN flew over just 20 ft. away, headed north (back to Stanford?) During this late-afternoon circuit, relatively few birds were encountered overall, but 4 California Thrashers were welcome finds, the last of these responding to pishing over chaparral with a low, froglike croaking I'd not heard from a thrasher before. A total of 59 Common Ravens followed the line of the Black Mountain Trail out of Rancho San Antonio during the interval between 4-5:15PM. There were 19 Varied Thrushes, but fewer than 10 Robins, despite the amazing profusion observed here last week. Sure enough, the Toyon berries are now stripped clean from the hillsides of Hidden Villa. On Thurs., 2/20, I had excellent views of a "light" adult Ferruginous Hawk over Alpine Rd. abour 1/2 mile east of its intersection with Portola St. Park Rd. at about 4PM. This is about 3 miles into San Mateo County, but I mention it because I glimpsed a similar-looking large buteo over Foothills Park on Friday afternoon at about the same time. --Garth Harwood _______________________________________________ Do not post admin requests to the list.
