To the best of my knowledge there is only one report in the last three decades away from the Palo Alto Baylands--a bird seen at dusk in August at the Sunnyvale WPCP by Mike Danzenbaker. There are a number of "possible" records, but none with acceptable descriptions. The true status of this bird in winter is difficult to determine because of its secretiveness. A century ago, amateurs used dogs and/or dragged chains to survey rails in the marshes and this was an effective technique. Where they nest in the North Bay there is some belief that they will respond to tapes in winter of the "grr" call. We've tried those tapes at the Baylands in years when we saw good numbers at high tides and had no response. For such a rare bird it is essential to have an excellent look and a complete description, but the Catch 22 is that Black Rails do not often provide those looks.
