You don't have to just bird in your backyard, either-- parks are fine. The rules are that you have to bird for 15 minutes at least and travel less than a mile. I submitted a checklist for part of a kayak trip to Elkhorn Slough last year. I sent them an e-mail and asked if I could submit a report from a kayak instead of walking, and they said "sure" and that I could break the trip up into one mile segments and report each as a new location. You can submit multiple lists for each day starting with today and going through Monday. It is fun to look at the maps and other information that are posted that tell who is seeing what and where. I just checked and Los Altos is in the top ten list for the number of species seen in California for today but not all the reports are in yet, they still could be bumped. Here is the web site: http://www.birdsource.org/gbbc/. It is sponsored by National Audubon Society and Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
