On Christmas I took a little drive and remained in the car, since it was raining, but was able to see the BALD EAGLE at Calero Reservoir, a SAY'S PHOEBE along Coyote Ranch Road, and an OSPREY over Parkway Lakes. On Friday, 26 Dec 03, I went back out in the Calero CBC area for a more extensive scout in the nicer weather. At the reservoir stables I had 2 TRICOLORED BLACKBIRDS and 17 WILD TURKEYS. A stop at Ogier Ponds showed the extensive rework to the area along the entrance of the model airplane park. The undercut bank of Coyote Creek, that kept washing out the road, was sloped and rip-rapped to stabilize it, while the paved road and bike trail were moved back from it. We lost a couple small ponds that were nearest to the trail, but most of the ponds north of the model airplane park are still intact. I flushed an AMERICAN BITTERN from the eastern edge of the pond immediately north of the airplane park, while 3 BARN SWALLOWS foraged over it. The next pond up had a pair of REDHEAD, while a pair of CINNAMON TEAL and some numbers of RING-NECKED DUCK were on a pond closer to the freeway. A SHARP-SHINNED HAWK soared overhead, and a male WOOD DUCK flushed from the creek. One of probably 3 OSPREYS on the day was perched in a sycamore east of the bike path. I then went to the Coyote Creek Golf Course, where I failed to find any grackles. However, a flock of CANADA GEESE on the ponds there had a single GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE. At Coyote Ranch Marsh I had a subadult female COOPER'S HAWK, and 3 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS were along the creek. The SAY'S PHOEBE was still along the road. An OSPREY flew overhead here, heading towards the south, while a few minutes later 1 was perched at Parkway Lakes.
