At the SCVWD pond, there was a young Peregrine Falcon hanging out on a tall snag (it made a couple of ineffectual passes at waterbirds). Ann Verdi soon joined me -- we saw two Green Herons, but no Bittern. There were about 8 species of ducks, including several Ring-necked and two Common Goldeneye, plus two or three dozen (Lesser) Scaup. I moved on to Almaden Lake, where I saw 4 Common Mergansers (2 male, 2 female), but nothing else of note, except perhaps a neat-looking Muscovy. Finally, at the west end of Almaden Reservoir, there were at least 51 Wood Ducks and 2 female Common Mergansers. Happy holidays.
