I saw 3 Clapper and 1 Virginia rail out near "Rail Alley". After the excitement of the Black Rail sightings, several of us went out to the boardwalk as the rangers inspected and re-opened it. There were 2 Clapper Rails on the boardwalk and several more calling from the marsh. When the birds left the boardwalk to forage in the marsh, we approached slowly. By doing this, we eventually were in position to have one of the rails climb back on the boardwalk and approach within 20 feet of us. Frame-filling shots for long lenses! One Clapper eventually jumped back into the marsh and started poking at a bird carcass about 12 feet from the boardwalk. From the smaller size, long bill, gray face, I could tell that it was an ex-Virginia Rail, a probable victim of the high water and exposure to the elements or a predator.... Also, before we walked out on the boardwalk, a couple, sans binoculars, were intently watching the section of levee just beyond the Nature Center from the deck. They said that they had been watching a Black Rail working along the near edge of the levee. We watched for a while to no avail, then, we went over to the area, but found nothing. I didn't "grill" the observers for more details, so I don't know how viable the sighting might have been.
