After pouting about the situation and watching the rail watchers from afar, I decided to try Bay Rd. in EPA. I got to the Ravenswood OSP parking area near Cooley Landing at the northeast end of Bay Rd. to find a couple of bird photographer friends standing on a berm surrounded by the flood tide waiting for a rail to pop up or for the tide to recede, whichever came first. This area appeared to be completely under water with a few shrubs dotting the surface. It seemed that the rails had probably left for high ground elsewhere. I went back to the Baylands in hopes the road being opened, which it was. I talked to Lisa Myers, who told me of her good fortune at seeing the bird. I joined the remaining people near the Harriet Mundy Marsh sign, remembering that the rails often were seen well after the peak of the tide. As luck would have it, I saw a small rail move quickly in the pickleweed and let others near me know. Unlike yesterday, this rail appeared to be small enough for a Black Rail. After a few minutes of staring into the dark holes of the shrubs, a birder next to me saw the bird move. Eventually, Deb Bartens saw it and described the small dark rail with the white speckling. I didn't see it better until a few minutes later, when I was able to see the chestnut collar. Deb commented that she thought more people got to see the bird at this later sighting. It's nice to know that some still come around. Les Chibana, Palo Alto _______________________________________________ Do not post admin requests to the list.
