It's entirely possible we were seeing the "white-headed" Ruddy Duck others have reported. We observed the bird for quite a long time, but it was at a great distance and we hadn't read the earlier reports of the irregularly colored Ruddy. The bird we saw slept most of the time, only raising its head once or twice. Both Kelly and I were confused by the markings but eventually identified it as LTDU. We probably didn't have good enough looks to identify the bird properly though. What we saw was the following: A smallish duck with a white head that had mostly dark sides and back but a pointed tail held at an angle. Some white appeared near the water line and under the tail, and we observed a subtle pattern on the back that was difficult to make out but visible in certain light. I interpreted them as mottling that suggested faint braces. Once the head was up (for just a moment) we saw a stumpy bill and some dark around the eye. In retrospect, we may have been wrong about the identification. It certainly had us convinced, especially since this is the area where we had seen Long-tailed Ducks a previous winter. Sorry for the mis-information, I'll do better next time.
