We headed up along the upper of the two paths from west of the parking lot and then, when the upper path splits, we took the lower split. Within 30 yards of this split I found a SAGE THRASHER foraging along the road. This bird was extremely cooperative, eventually walking towards us along the road to the point where we could no longer focus on it in our scopes! It is a well-marked bird with strong streaking below, a somewhat mangy face on the left side (some missing feathers) and appears to be in molt (the upper two tertials on the right side have been dropped). The bird was still present at 12:22pm when we left it to scope ducks. Among the interesting ducks on the west pond were 10 REDHEAD (4 males and 6 females) and 2 male EURASIAN WIGEON (1 adult and 1 immature). Mike spotted an apparent dark male columbarius MERLIN on a power tower south of A4. The Sage Thrasher is a great count week bird for the Palo Alto CBC and, I believe, the first December record for the county!
