X-BeenThere: [[email protected]] X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.2+ Precedence: list List-Id: South Bay Birding List-Unsubscribe: , List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Sender: south-bay-birds-bounces+south-bay-birds-archive=[[email protected]] Errors-To: south-bay-birds-bounces+south-bay-birds-archive=[[email protected]] All: This morning, Thursday, from about 10:30 to 11:30, I watched a white-headed duck diving continuously near the eastern edge of salt pond A1 (the pond just north of Shoreline Lake.) The wind and the waves made viewing very difficult. I would have called this a definite Long-tailed Duck, except for the previous sightings of a "white-headed" Ruddy Duck in this same area. I saw neither a very long tail, nor a raised stiff-tail; the bird rode low in the water and was continuously diving. However, today's bird also had a mottled black-and-white back, with some suggestion of dark, front-to-back streaks, which I didn't think was reported on the original RUDU. If it is a LTDU, it's in a transition phase of its complex plumage changes. I needed better views ... or an expert. On the golf course south of the lake, there were 2 Ross's Geese in with the Canada Geese. Frank Vanslager _______________________________________________ Do not post admin requests to the list.
