At first content that it was an immature Black crowned Night Heron, we walked away. Fortunately one member of our group, Bev Hesse insisted on checking her field guide. She and Freddy went over the bird point by point and realized it was a Bittern. It was first seen on the south end of the pond from the educational area, later from the east side of the pond looking west near the older brick building. Also on the pond were 2 male Common Goldeneye, a pair of Northern Shovelers, 1 Ring necked Duck, Green Heron, Lesser Scaup, Great Blue Heron, 2 Black crowned Night Herons, Gadwall, Ruddy Ducks, Belted Kingfisher, and Common Yellowthroat. East of the pond on the river channel were 30+ Snowy Egrets, 4 Great Egrets, many female Common Mergansers, 2 male Common Mergansers, 2 Black crowned Night Herons, 2 Green Herons, 3 Common Moorhens, and 1 Spotted Sandpiper.
