Kris and All,

My feelings at the time were that the legs were "stained" by the algae [note 
that as you watch the birds feed in some areas of the mat that they slowly 
sink into the algae] and that the legs were a dark grayish-green [various light 
angles could accentuate this effect].  I'm sure that if the legs were clean 
they would be mostly black.
