I monitor the Great Blue Heron colony at Grant Ranch for the San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory. Around the lake, I've often seen two Great Egrets, also Green Herons and less often Black-Crowned Night Herons. Last Sunday, I saw all four of the mentioned species. I've often scanned the island in Hall's Lake looking for nests but have not found any, although Sunday, I believe I heard bill clacking from the island. From one of the fishing locations closest to the island, I saw two Great Egrets, a Green Heron and an immature Black-Crowned Night Heron roosting on the island. So I've got a couple questions that this group might be able to help with. Has anyone ever positively identified any heron nesting on the island in Hall's Lake? Does the presence of an immature Black-Crowned Night Heron at this time of year indicate nesting of this species at that location? How long do night herons retain that first summer plumage? What do we know about the dispersal patterns of young night herons? Thanks for any information.
