This bird, a molting adult female and likely our returning bird, suddenly appeared at 11:04am from behind the strip of green vegetation along the back edge of the first pond east of the railroad tracks as one heads north from the EEC entrance road in Alviso. It still has a fair amount of mottled black in patches on the breast but the throat and face show no remnants of alternate plumage. The uppermost tertials on either side of the bird have been dropped, revealing the normally hidden bases of the tertials below them. Two LESSER YELLOWLEGS were also here today. Quick stop at the CCFS waterbird pond both days were uneventful. Yesterday 8/9/03 there were 28+ SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 2 CASPIAN TERNS overhead, an immature COOPER'S HAWK, 1 WILSON'S PHALAROPE, and less than one hundred peeps (WESTERN and LEAST). Today the water level was raised and there were no peeps at all (although one SPOTTED SANDPIPER flew in with two LEASTS from the sludge ponds only to depart without landing). Another interesting bird yesterday 8/9/03 was a NORTHERN (RED-SHAFTED) FLICKER flying between the eucalyptus trees along the edge of the sludge ponds adjacent to the CCFS trailer - this is very early for a fall bird on the valley floor.
