The bird had bright orange-yellow legs, a blotchy black breast, pure white underparts, boldly barred tertials, and a mostly dark bill. Many scapular feathers were usually raised on the back (whether facing away from or into the wind). The size of the bird tended to point toward it being a male; the body seeming to be longer than dowitchers near it but with the shorter bill making them seem to be about the same length.
