I'm guessing female American Goldfinch, nonbreeding -- maybe a first summer bird? (The plain gray bill.) Or might it be a juvenile? I'm reacting to the drawings in Clement, Finches and Sparrows, plate 12, compare 65d with 65e. Or more intriguingly, does the amount of gray, both in underparts and head, suggest female Lawrence's? (No streaking, so not a juvenile.) See Clement plate 12, 67c and d. Nearest Lawrence's I've seen to my back yard (back of the Stanford campus) were a couple miles further up into the foothills, Arastradero Preserve.
