I heard 1 GRASSHOPPER SPARROW singing near the trailhead, but was unable to get any views of it. A number of RUFOUS-CROWNED SPARROWS were also singing from the chaparral here, while 3 WESTERN KINGBIRDS cavorted along the fenceline. Walking down the Calero Creek Trail I found a pair of AMERICAN KESTRELS being very vocal in a large valley oak and surmised that they might be nesting, or planning to, in that tree. A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was carrying nesting material into the residential area here, and a BUSHTIT was carrying nesting material further down the trail. Also a small BOBCAT, probably a female, with a freshly-killed ground squirrel was on the trail before it sauntered off across an orchard with its meal.
