Taking advantage of the sunshine I ran over to Vasona to check on the Great Blue Heron Rookery (I was there yesterday and all the babies were hunkered down), but today the little ones were up and making a racket! Four in Nest 1 were just as bright eyed and happy to see the sun as I was. Took great digital photos.... I birded Vasona, lots of Western Bluebirds today as well as Bullock's Orioles. Watched a pair of Red-shouldered Hawks in some sort of display. One would drop its talons and make a steep dive and the other would follow...then back up high they went. One landed in a tree and got attacked by the Crows and an Anna's Hummingbird! >From there I went to La Rinconada and watched a Robin incubating and being harassed by a Scrub Jay......CA Quail, Thrashers, Spotted Towhees and Cedar Waxwings were present. No sign of the Ash-throated yet. Just couldn't let Steven's Creek Park go by another day without a quick check. I had my first of the season sighting of a Pacific Slope Flycatcher. Lots of Hutton's Vireos, Spotted Towhees, and Juncos. CA Quail were seen by the dam. A few Yellow-rump Warblers. I watched a Chickadee for the third year in a row nest in the small tree stump by the bridge. Flickers, Downys and Nutall's with a few White-breasted Nuthatch rounded out the list. Tons of Bushtits..... A pair of Red-shouldered Hawk were present by the Ranger's House.... On my back to the car I noticed Stellar's Jay's attacking something in the EUC trees by the Ranger's Station and when I used my binocs I found that they were harassing a Great Horned Owl. What a great treat to find (and take pictures of). Wishing you all a great holiday weekend and good birding.
