Their characteristic song was first heard several times in the grassy field about 70 to 100 yards past the switchbacks and the chaparral brush. Later I scoped one from about 25 feet away as it sang for 10 minutes on top of a barbed wire fence by the trail. Jim Danzenbaker had reported a very cooperative grasshopper sparrow in this general location on March 29. RUFOUS-CROWNED SPARROWS were still singing atop chapparal bushes around the switchbacks. And the expected western kingbirds, California towhees, crowned sparrows, western meadowlarks, horned larks, violet-green and barn swallows, red tails, turkey vultures, a yellow-billed magpie, etc. were seen near this stretch of Stiles Ranch Trail. The gray feathers on one distant kingbird seemed darker than I'd expect a Western to have, but it was too far away to verify species. Fun area to bird!
