I saw at least 24 of them, 20 in one flock. This didn't match my previous high, but there could easily have been more (e.g., birds which hadn't joined those 20 on the ground). I in fact had six Finch species (just one Pine Siskin noticed); quite a few Western Bluebirds as well. More of a surprise was an adult Chipping Sparrow with a small group of Juncos. (I've seen this species here two or three times on the Palo Alto CBC, or at least in count week, but they are difficult. It may be too early to hope this one will stick. The Lawrence's never do.) Finally I had one intergrade female Flicker (red-shafted, but with a pale brown face). Directions aren't easy. For those who know the Course, the main Finch area today was northeast of the restroom, which is in turn located along the west boundary. Note that Monday is maintenance day. This means that, while one has to put up with the lawn machinery, etc., the only golfers are a few employees. I would be *extremely* cautious about birding there on any other day -- even slight interference with a paying golfer has to be avoided.
