I spotted the bird along the northern edge of the Great Meadow feeding in the grass. I've seen one or two of this species in this location over quite a few falls/winters. I don't know if the same bird is returning each time but it would seem likely to me. There were two small, dark ducks in the pond that I didn't recognize. The ducks were in opposite ends of the pond. Each had a distinct white mark behind the eye. The closest thing I can find in my field guide is a female or juvenile BUFFLEHEAD. However, the white mark on the birds I saw seemed more defined than that shown in Sibley. I watched one of these birds fly away. It showed more white in flight and flew large circles around the area before disappearing off to the south/southwest.
