Last night, 10/10/02, we went owling. Got 2-3 WESTERN SCREECH-OWL responses at Almaden-Quicksilver Park but only cursory views. No poorwill response; one Western Spadefoot seen. Got 3-4 WESO responses at Stevens Creek Park, with one good view. No saw-whet or late pygmy-owl responses. Early this morning, 10/11/02, we got no small owl responses at Monte Bello. We found a fairly vocal male VARIED THRUSH. A group of 54 commuting COMMON RAVENS headed toward the Bay, followed later by another 4. Loud "kik-kik-kik-kik" (or "kuk-kuk-kuk-kuk" depending on the inflection) calls of a possible Pileated Woodpecker echoed from the Stevens Creek Drainage. Arastradero Preserve had two very noisy BELTED KINGFISHERs zooming around the main pond. A male BLUE-WINGED TEAL with a gimpy foot hung out with GREEN-WINGED TEAL at the old yacht harbor area. 2 BARN OWLs and one GREAT-HORNED OWL were at Ed Levin Park.
