Schistacea FOX SPARROW in my yard. I checked the bill and it didn't appear larger than on the Sooty Fox Sparrows, so, I don't think it's a large-billed montane type. As in my sighting on 10/23/02, this bird had a cold gray head, mantle, lesser coverts. Greater secondary coverts, primaries and tail were rufous. Faint streaking was apparent on the back. The malar stripe was whitish, contrasting with the rest of the cheek and neck. Breast marks were finer than on the more typical sooty-types, somewhat like the difference between the breast streaks on a Lincoln's Sparrow compared to a Song Sparrow. There was another slate-colored type Fox Sparrow present that could have been the one I thought might be an "altivagans", also seen previously on 10/23. Intermediately grayish face, faint wingbars. My yard is on the northeast side of Skyline Blvd. near Long Ridge OSP at the western edge of the county.
