So here goes! If you are unfamiliar to this count, see page 9 of the Nov.-Dec. Avocet for the general location of our count circle. My first task is to enlist the Regional Coordinators for the eight regions in our circle, many of whom have performed this task admirably in the past and I am hoping will agree to continue in that roll. I am asking those listed below to contact me ASAP with their consent or regrets. If this list is not correct please let me know, especially if you were a coordinator last year and agree to continue this year. When you respond to me, please tell me the general areas of coverage within your region. This will better enable me to answer any questions pertaining to coverage within the circle. Region 1 Open Region 2 Mike Rogers Region 3 Garth Harwood Region 4 Phyllis Browning Region 5 Marcia Keimer Region 6 Ruth Troetschler Region 7 Open Region 8 Leda Beth Gray (agreed to continue) My second task is to encourage everyone who can contribute even part of a day to participate. If you have taken part in as many CBC's as some of us have, then you know how much fun they can be (in ANY kind of weather). If this might be your first event, then you are in for a good time. Birders of ALL levels are welcome, as more eyes and more ears equal more area covered and more birds counted. The Regional Coordinators will be recruiting counters as well, but if you are not assigned and/or are new to the count, let me know and I will direct you to a region where you are most needed. Finally, Mike Rogers has agreed to head our Rare Bird Committee; Al Eisner will be our Count Compiler (and conduct the countdown at the dinner, right Al?); Ruth Troetschler has graciously offered her home for our countdown dinner (let me know how I can help, Ruth); and hopefully Ann Verdi will once again coordinate our access permits from Cargill Salt (OK, Ann?). We are all looking forward to another successful count, continuing a national tradition that will soon be 103 years old. Last year we recorded 113,833 birds of 170 species. Can we top those totals this year? We can with your help. Jack Cole 408-996-0434 --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!?
