After quite a bit of searching, the plovers finally shuffled themselves around enough so that the Lesser Golden-Plover was out in the open again. With the scope it was clear that this bird was a worn juvenile PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER, with little primary extension past the tertials and some retained scapulars with very broad intense golden edges. Although this species overwinters on the coast, it is now only a migrant in Santa Clara County. This bird is very late, being the latest in recent times, as they normally have finished moving through by mid-October.
