These were heard only birds but my confidence stemmed from the fact that I compared the calling birds real time to the Peterson's Western Bird tape that I was carrying with me for this very reason. The call sounded very similar to the first two calls on the tape (which sound very different from the calls of Townsend's and BT Grey Warblers on the tape). But of course there is a lot of variation and overlap in the field and I have been advised that id'ing these species by ear is fraught with danger. Without a visual confirmation, and since BLACK-THROATED GREY WARBLERs were seen in the count area, I am uncomfortable with my intial id. Our first stop was at the "Upper Saddle" where we immediately had a singing BLACK-CHINNED SPARROW (several heard, one seen). Other birds included BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK, CALIFORNIA THRASHER, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, BEWICK'S WREN, BUSHTIT, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, WRENTIT, WESTERN SCRUB-JAY, SPOTTED TOWHEE, ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD, PURPLE FINCH and HOUSE FINCH. The only soaring bird was an adult RED-TAILED HAWK, no swifts or martins ;-( We then went to the "Lower Saddle, " to the pullout just up from the Pavement Ends sign where we added OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER, WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE and an adult male WESTERN TANAGER. We then climbed to the top of the hill to the north of the Pavement Ends sign where we had a singing SAGE SPARROW and a singing Black-chinned Sparrow (both well seen). It was interesting to note that as we drove up to Loma Prieta the temperature increased (at my house it was 65 degrees and at the Upper Saddle on top of the mountain it was 76 degrees and very windy). It was more normal on the way down (86 degrees on top, 94 degrees at home). Take care, Bob Reiling, 1:02 PM, 6/5/02
