They were side by side on an high branch in one of there trees. The mom was holding a prey between her leg and the branch as usual, and she was picking it. The little birdie was imitating her from time to time, but most of the time, the mom was directly feeding her baby. I could film the scene but it was hard to focus on because of the leaves. I will try to extract a few pictures tonight. Let me know if you are interested in them. Have a great day, Laurent. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Saw 3-4 WOOD DUCKS there, a few GREEN HERONS, and a BELTED KINGFISHER carrying a fish. ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER, HOUSE WREN, YELLOW WARBLER, BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK, and PURPLE FINCH were heard along the creek upstream from the reservoir. Last Saturday's Santa Clara Audubon field trip to Rancho del Oso was pretty good birdwise--SWAINSON'S THRUSHES and WILSON'S WARBLERS were particularly abundant! Along Waddell Creek we got to see a couple of WOOD DUCKS and a female COMMON MERGANSER with a brood of half-grown ducklings. Tantalizing heard-only birds included OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, WINTER WRENS, and a singing GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET at Camp Herbert. A bit unusual for the locale was an ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER found by Kirsten Holmquist (thanks for bringing the scope!). Best non-bird sighting was the GRAY FOX that crossed the path in front of us with a furry victim in its jaws (maybe a Brush Rabbit?) followed by a harrassing mob of jays. A last minute reminder--Santa Clara Valley Audubon's class on Birds of the Sierra Nevada meets this coming Monday, followed by a field trip to Yosemite National Park on the weekend of June 27-30. There is still space available in the class and IT IS STILL POSSIBLE TO GET ACCOMODATIONS IN THE PARK--Carole Hutchinson has informed me that she has an extra tent cabin reserved, and is holding the reservation til this weekend in case someone out there would like to take it. If anyone is interested please contact Carole as soon as possible at [[email protected]] and call the Santa Clara Valley Audubon office at 408-252-3747. While we are in the park we'll be looking for Sierran specialties like Blue Grouse, Calliope Hummingbird, Black-backed Woodpecker, Pine Grosbeak, and Gray-crowned Rosy Finch. It's a long shot, but we'll have opportunities to try for Great Gray Owl. A side trip to Mono Lake on Saturday will give us a good chance at Great Basin species such as Gray Flycatcher, Sage Thrasher, Green-tailed Towhee, and Brewer's Sparrow.
