Sightings from the Santa Clara Valley are always unusual, but this is starting to look like an invasion year for this species. They have nested in the valley in the past in Alum Rock Park, along the Santa Teresa Hills (John Mariani), and in Los Alto Hills. This may be a good year for this species, so keep a close eye out for them. They do breed fairly late in the season. They have been sighted at low tides in "Rail Alley" out on the boardwalk behind Palo Alto Baylands Nature Center. Naturally, they all go into hiding when I go out to look for them but the sources are solid. Tonight driving home I spotted a bird ahead of me flying rather low in the sky. It was flying as if it was just having fun with no particular place to go. In between rapid wing beats, it was circling and gliding. As I got closer and looked up from below I could see it was a Peregrine. Soon I spotted a second one as they appeared to be lazily flying around each other. I pulled over to watch and they were soon on their way flying in a southern direction. I observed them at 8:25 PM around the 85 / Winchester exit. Lisa Myers
