Driving by Calero in the pre-dawn light we had a BARN OWL foraging along the side of the road and it crossed in front of us. We stopped to say hello to another party at the stable entrance and to plan our route and saw probably the same Barn Owl again. But he was completely uninterested in my squeaking attempts. Roadside birding was mostly quiet except for AMERICAN ROBINS and CEDAR WAXWINGS which were in large flocks all day long. Two WOOD DUCKS were in a pond beside McKean and two more at the north end of Uvas Reservoir. A female/imm COMMON MERGANSER was also at the upper end of Uvas. Best bird of our day was an AMERICAN DIPPER at the bridge where Croy Creek flows into Uvas Creek on Croy Road (a spot recommended by Grant Hoyt). Eventually the rain convinced us to quit.
