We have party leaders for all areas within our count circle, but we really need more birders to help with the counting! This is an invitation to anybody out there who would like to participate, we need you!!! Below are some specific areas and party leaders that need help this winter: Rick Herder will be party leader for Coyote Ridge. This is a wonderful ridgetop area that birders don't normally have access to, and on past counts has had winter rarities like Mountain Bluebird, Grasshopper Sparrow, Bald Eagle, and Prairie Falcon. It's Rock Wren and Horned Lark heaven up there, and the pastures have potential for longspurs (the habitat is similar to that atop Sierra Road). If you would like to join his party, please contact Rick at [[email protected]] or by phone at 408-779-3985. A scope and knoweldge of longspur flight calls would be a big plus! Tom Ryan will be leader for Calero County Park - But he needs more birders for his party! Calero Reservoir is one of the best birding spots in the county, with plenty of waterfowl and raptors, and good birds found on every count (Bald Eagle, Red Phalarope, Red-necked Grebe, and loons in just the last week). If you would like to join his group please contact him at [[email protected]] Santa Teresa County Park and vicinity - Leaders for this area are Chuck and Linda Hignite. The park has a variety of habitats and good hiking trails, with Golden Eagle, Rufous-crowned Sparrow, Rock Wren, etc. If you can help them count birds in this area, please contact the Hignites at [[email protected]] Bill Bousman is party leader for the Uvas Canyon Area - This area is mostly woodland, with coniferous forest species and American Dipper possible along Uvas Creek. It's an important area for the count because it represents coniferous forest habitat that is very limited within our count circle. If you would like to be part of his party, please contact Bill at [[email protected]] Mike Mammoser is looking for another birder who would be willing to lead part of his group, which will cover the Ogier Ponds and riparian along Coyote Creek. This is one of our best riparian/wetland areas in the count circle. He can be contacted at [[email protected]] Hope to see many of you at the countdown! I wish you good birding and happy holidays!
