Hello fellow SBBers:

I knew I had seen this message somewhere and was surprised when Bill Bousman
said that a Red-throated Loon had not been found in the county (Santa Clara)
yet this year.  Luckily I came across the message again on County Birders as
I was cleaning out my email box.

I understand that these loons may winter here, so it could be worth looking
for. I have not looked for it yet. Good CBC bird?

On November 23, 2002, a Red-throated Loon was in Salt Pond A-10 on the
Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge's Alviso Slough
Trail out of the Alviso Marina.  This is an excellent 10 mile trail with
the outermost ponds (A-9 & 10) having 1000's of ducks and grebes in the
winter. A bicycle is helpful.  Other birds were as Mike Rogers reported
on November 16th on South Bay Birds except we did not find his red-necked
Phalarope.  Other birds of interest to us were a horned grebe and a male
hooded merganser also on A-10.
