The EEC was closed so we went to Charleston Slough (really low tide), lots of Dowitchers and AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS in Adobe Creek where a LEAST SANDPIPER gave us a start as it persistently showed lots of white on it's rump (despite it's apparent small size we watched the bird until we could verify a dark line running up the center of the rump). We then went to Stevens Creek Mitigation Pond (the "usual suspects") and then to Crittenden Marsh (we knew it was too early tide wise) where it a small flock of Least Sandpipers included a SEMIPALMATED PLOVER (lots of those across the creek but it's size did get us going for a while). Best birds were 8-10 LEAST TERNS and a juvenile SPOTTED SANDPIPER in Salt Pond A2E. Also enjoyed watching a Gull chasing a FORSTER'S TERN until it dropped a nice sized fish which the Gull caught in midair for a snack. Take care, Bob Reiling, 4:28 PM, 8/8/02
