I came up with 6 PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHERS, a WARBLING VIREO, and an immature ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER. Three female-like BULLOCK'S ORIOLES were in the eucalyptus tree near the trailer. The Waterbird Pond is a good deal higher now in water level, so only the larger waders were present. The pond at State and Spreckles in Alviso had lots of GREATER YELLOWLEGS and a few LESSERS, but not much else. At the Sunnyvale Sewage Ponds I found a GREEN HERON at the pool near the power tower. Heading out towards the radar station I met Emily (sorry, I forgot her last name) and further out Dennis and Pat Braddy, and we all went out to the algae mat to look at shorebirds. Though there were lots of SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, WESTERN, and LEAST SANDPIPERS, nothing unusual was seen. I counted 2100 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES on the East Pond. On Sunday, 11 Aug 02, I looked over the sod farm in Coyote Valley, but found nothing but AMERICAN CROWS and blackbirds. Ogier Ponds was quiet, except for a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, a GREEN HERON, and a BLACK-NECKED STILT. Lots of BEWICK'S WRENS and a family of OAK TITMICE along the bike path at Coyote Ranch. So I headed for Shoreline Park, where I walked through the weedy fields next to the kite flying area, dreaming of Lesser Nighthawks. However, all I found were 4 BURROWING OWLS and a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE. I eventually wandered over to Crittenden Marsh and found the 2 juvenile BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS. There were at least 30 LEAST TERNS over the waters of A2E and a SPOTTED SANDPIPER along the shore. Dennis Braddy showed up and we refound the Baird's, and later found them again for Peggy Don and her husband Bill. Mike was just leaving Crittenden Marsh as I was arriving at 12:30 this afternoon. Mike turned around, led me to the right spot (the northeast corner of Crittenden Marsh), and pointed out not one, but two BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS. For the next hour we watched one or both birds feed in or near small flocks of mostly Least Sandpipers. The Baird's seemed less wary than the Least Sandpipers. They sometimes remained behind when the Least took flight. One of the Baird's found a comfortable spot to hunker down and just loafed for a while. Thanks again for the life-bird Mike.
